Mississippi State 2016 commitment Dustin Skelton was selected to play on Team Mississippi in the Sunbelt Classic Tournament in Oklahoma. He discusses the positives of playing in such an elite tournament.
"Talking to other guys who have gone before, guys such as (2015 MSU commitment) Austin Riley, they say it's a really good experience playing with guys who will be playing D-I baseball," said Skelton. "I like being around that and showcasing my talent."
Five other MSU commitments played on the same team with him.
"I look forward to playing with my future teammates and getting to know them," said Skelton. "Some of them I didn't know growing up, so now I'm trying to become friends with them."
Skelton was selected to play on the team due to his amazing defensive ability behind the plate, his very strong arm and his hitting for average. He talked about those strengths.
"I think my strengths are behind the plate and my arm strength," said Skelton. "I've always been small for my age group so I've always had to try and figure out how to hit. I've always hit for average and didn't hit many home runs. I've always tried to use the opposite field and hit the ball where it is pitched."
Although he grew up a fan of Ole Miss baseball, Mississippi State won out over an offer from Ole Miss, primarily due to one thing.
"I love being able to call the game," said Skelton. "And they let the catchers do that at Mississippi State. Growing up, I was an Ole Miss fan but they don't allow their catchers to call the game there. I didn't like that so I figured out where I needed to be. Now, I'm ready to go and looking forward to it."
Now that he is an MSU commitment, he keeps a close eye on his future team.
"It's unbelievable how they are getting better every year," said Skelton. "I'm looking forward to playing at Mississippi State."
Playing at Dudy Noble a couple of times while playing on summer travel teams has really whet his appetite for what is ahead of him.
"I've played on Dudy Noble two times," said Skelton. "It's awesome playing there. It's breathtaking to think that I am going to be in front of all of the amazing Mississippi State fans."
