Conner Discusses Recruiting

Montrell Conner has the complete package at RB, with his ideal size (6-2, 230) and terrific top-end speed, and the former Ouachita star has three years to play three as he decides where to further his career after a season in the JUCO ranks. Which lucky schools are being considered?

"Right now, I don't have a top (list of schools)," said RB Montrell Conner, who will soon transfer from Copiah-Lincoln Community College to a four-year program. "Everybody hasn't finished their season yet - some schools are still involved with their bowl games, so I'm trying to wait it out.

"I have offers from Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Oregon, and Cincinnati. Tennessee has talked to me a little bit, and so has North Carolina. I've also heard from Oklahoma and Auburn - I had offers from all of those schools in high school - and I expect TCU to call soon. My junior college coach let TCU know that I was available, and they didn't know until then. They've been busy with their bowl game and they're interested."

There's been talk that Louisiana Tech and UL are the two programs with the inside track. Is that the case?

"Those two have an automatic advantage because they're from my home state," explained Conner, who was a four-star prospect on the prep football level for the Ouachita Lions and head coach John Carr. "Tech especially has a big advantage, because they're 30 minutes away from home, and they have a lot of players that I'm friends with - guys I played with and against in high school.

"It would be easier for my friends and family to come to my games if I went to Tech, but at the same time, I have to do what's best for me. I'm not ruling out Tech, but I can't worry how close or how far a school is...I have to go where I'm going to be happy, and if that means going to a small Division II school, then I'll do that. It's not about how big a school's name is or who they are; it's about where I'll be happy. I have to make the right choice, because I'm not going to get a third chance to change schools."

In that regard, Conner is contemplating a visit to Hampton (Va.) this weekend.

"I'm visiting UL next weekend, and Tech is working on setting one up," he said.
