Dan Mullen wasted no time showing he was in a fine post-practice mood Tuesday, when as circling scribes gathered the coach jumped that snap-count. “Want me to ask the question?” quipped Mullen, before supplying his own answer as well. “It was a good practice. Our guys came out and practiced.”   Full Story

If any Bulldog would justifiably expand his attention beyond the schedule events of Egg Bowl week, it would be J.C. Brignone. After all, he and wife Blair are awaiting arrival of their first child and while December 7 is the official due-date “It’s any time, any day, it could be right now!” Barring it be any day between now and kickoff, though, Blair will be seen in her Scott Field seat as usual.   Full Story

Reckon we should have known it would be a rough day for Bulldog signalmen when before a hike could be hutted a flag flew for delay of game. The very first Dog d.o.g. of this whole 2009 season in fact, and no they can’t blame your editor for jinxing it as I hadn’t broached the topic for weeks. Never mind that the penalty was due to a faulty play clock.   Full Story

RECEIVER/RETURNER CHAD BUMPHIS: “I practiced punt return all week so I was ready. At first I thought he (Leon Berry) was going back in but they told me to be ready because he might not play, so they put me back there. My special teams was alright, but I didn’t do too well on offense. I’ve just got to run better routes and get open more.”   Full Story

Q: Talk about Ryan Mallett’s game? “He did a nice job. Throw five touchdown passes that’s a heck of a day. He made a bunch of big plays. Five touchdowns passes on 18 completions, 313 yards on 18 completions, that’s a heck of a day. We were not very good in our secondary, we didn’t make plays that were there to be made.”   Full Story

Mississippi State will still go bowling, after a fashion. “We’ll play the Egg Bowl,” said Coach Dan Mullen. “That’s a bowl game.” All true. But the other fact remains that these Bulldogs will still spend the holiday break at home, after Arkansas ended hopes of a post-season berth 42-21 at War Memorial Stadium. The Razorbacks improved to 7-4, 3-4 SEC, while State left Little Rock 4-7, 2-5.   Full Story

Points and yards rightfully grab the most attention. Yet there is another leading indicator to why Mississippi State’s air-offense has been much more productive the season: the quarterbacks have better time to toss. After giving up 36 sacks in 12 games last fall, State's 2009 slingers have been dropped for losses 14 times in ten games.   Full Story

It isn’t as if the Bulldog defense hasn’t been tested to all limits many times already this season. At the same time, neither can Arkansas’ high-flying attack be regarded as just the next challenge. “They’re the number-one offense in the SEC in yards, pass offense, touchdowns, stuff like that,” linebacker Jamar Chaney acknowledged.   Full Story

Week Eleven under the gun

David Murray of GenesPage.com, Nov 15, 2009
My end-of-game comment was mistaken by the lone hearer. I suggested that the Bulldogs burn last night’s new jerseys only as a symbolic means of putting a defeat behind them; not that State shouldn’t wear such a hue again. But the vigorous response from this no-need-to-ID’d friend, to what he thought I had meant, triggered a train of thought here.   Full Story

QUARTERBACK TYSON LEE: “It was really tough. Especially the first half, we weren’t able to run the ball like we needed to. The second half we were able to kind of establish the running game which opened up the passing game, we just weren’t able to make the big plays when we needed to. And we came up empty.”   Full Story

There are a million examples in sports when statistics did not pan out. The very best major league team will lose over 50 games. The Jets win the Super Bowl. The Celtics lose to the Harlem Globetrotters. Well, maybe not that. Nevertheless, statistics can give some clue as to what to expect in a college football game, albeit not necessarily the final result.   Full Story
