That early-season listing as the NCAA’s most accurate shooting squad suddenly doesn’t mean very much. Not after St. Bonaventure got a real lesson from Mississippi State about how to throw the ball through the basket.   Full Story

Their season hasn’t begun nearly as well as expected and the frustration has been evident on and off the court. Yet veteran Bulldogs have seen signs that maybe some of the old spark is back, based upon their most recent outing. “We didn’t feel sorry for ourselves,” said Jarvis Varnado. “We came out with energy.”   Full Story

The Bulldogs were indeed better, as their coach had said. Whether the expected victory is evidence Mississippi State is prepared now to play a better level of competition remains the real issue for Rick Stansbury. “It’s kind of like starting over again,” he said following a 75-50 win over visiting Texas-Pan American.   Full Story

Whether or not the opponent is offended, Rick Stansbury is certainly candid. “After tonight there’s no more of these,” the Bulldog coach said. The ‘these’ being by implication early-season guests that Mississippi State scheduled as victories to prepare them for the meat of the 2009-10 season. Tonight it is Texas-Pan American’s turn with a 7:00 game at Humphrey Coliseum.   Full Story

STARKVILLE, Miss. - All-SEC center forward Jarvis Varnado swatted 4 shots to become the Southeastern Conference's all-time leading shot-blocker as Mississippi State (2-1) cruised to a 67-51 victory against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Saturday evening in Humphrey Coliseum.   Full Story

The league shot-blocking record has to wait for another day; almost certainly this Saturday. For that matter Jarvis Varnado wasn’t making too much of his 20-point outing against Southeastern Louisiana. Only one line mattered on this post-game stat sheet. “The win, the win, the win,” the Bulldog center said after a 82-67 victory.   Full Story

Kodi Augustus still doesn’t downplay the frustrations. But he does very much regret his reactions—make that overreactions—following Mississippi State’s season-opening defeat. “It’s over and it will never happen again,” the junior forward said about his post-game outburst. “I need to grow up and it will never happen again.”   Full Story

At least the new jewelry was nice and shiny. Because the highlight of Mississippi State’s season-opening event turned out to be the pre-game ceremony with rings presented to the 2009 SEC Tournament champions. Visiting Rider applauded politely before tip-off, then went about spoiling the rest of the evening with a 88-74 victory over the #18-ranked Bulldogs.   Full Story

Depending on which forecaster is consulted, these Bulldogs are anything from a top-ten squad, to a lower top-twenty group, to not even ranked in a few preseason pollings. So safe to say there’s a mix of opinions on what Mississippi State is and will be this winter. Which does not bother Rick Stansbury at all. “We don’t have our identity figured out ourselves,” he said. “And our identity changes.”   Full Story

While many fans think this Mississippi State team has a chance to make it to the Final Four, what does MSU head coach Rick Stansbury think - does he believe this team has a legitimate chance to make it to the Final Four? It’s understandable if Rick Stansbury avoids checking the calendar these days. Here Bulldog basketball is, barely into week-two of preseason practicing and already forced to think about preparing for a game. An exhibition game, true, but a live contest on court all the same that comes when Stansbury would rather be coaching this club in a more general context.   Full Story
