There’s an antique tale, attributed to eastern Europe’s Jewish culture, of the farmer who loses his only horse. As neighbors commiserate, the old man asks how they know this was for bad. When said horse is recovered and neighbors cheer, he asks how they know it is for good. Then the horse kicks the man’s son, breaking a leg, he responds how are they sure it is bad.
