Men's Golf
CORDOVA, Tenn. - The Mississippi State men’s golf team completed competition at
the Memphis Intercollegiate with a top five showing after the final round was
cancelled due to weather conditions on Tuesday.
After firing a first round score of 301 on Monday, MState rebounded with a
5-over-par second round score of 293 later in the day. After the first round,
MSU was sixth amongst the team standings, but through their play of the second
round were able to work their way to a third-place finish. The Bulldogs had
four players finish among the top 20 individual field, but only three counted
towards MSU’s team score as Logan Young entered the tournament as an
individual.
"We played very well in the second round after a slow start in the first round,"
said MState Head Coach Clay Homan. "We have done very well in the later rounds
this season. We just have to get off to a better start in order to compete for
tournament titles."
Senior Carlos Sainz, Jr., competing in his third tournament of the fall, was the
lead Bulldog in the tournament, tying for 11th among the individual field with
a 3-over-par combined two-round score of 147. Upon shooting a 1-over-par first
round, Sainz, Jr., replied with a 2-over-par round in the second round.
"Carlos is playing very consistent," said Homan. "Once his putts start falling,
Carlos will win a tournament."
Sainz Jr. has been MSU’s top finisher in every tournament this fall and posts
his third top-15 finish of the season.
Senior Josh Bevell, seeing his second action of the fall, finished in a tie for
13th with rounds of 78 and 70 to finish at 4-over par for the tournament.
Bevell’s 2-under-par 70 was the second best individual performance of the
tournament’s second round. Senior Noah Goldman posted back-to-back 74’s to post
a two-day total of 148.
Senior Mat Fast posted first and second round scores of 76 and 75 respectively
for a tournament total of 151 and a tie for 30th. Redshirt freshman Lee Heaton
finished out the Bulldog scoring with a 156.
Senior Logan Young entered the tournament as an individual. The Memphis native
shot matching 2-over-par 74’s to finish in a tie for 13th in the individual
field.
Ohio State finished first amongst the 15-team field with a 12-over-par, while
Memphis was three shots back in second place followed by MSU.
MState will take a three-week break from fall competition. They return to action
on October 27 at the Bridgestone UNC-Greensboro Intercollegiate at Forest Oaks
Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
