Nick Gibson committed to Mississippi State prior to his senior season. Gibson reports that he took comfort in the notion that the Bulldogs were on the verge of something big. Townsend Turns Corners' Focus To Kat Air Game

Townsend Turns Corners' Focus To Kat Air Game

Deshea Townsend has made a fine career working on the defensive side of football. Yet there are times during deep-ball drills, when he hangs one high and long for his cornerbacks to cover… “Oh man, hey, I think I missed out on my calling!” he laughed. “If I was coming up nowadays I’d be one of those quarterbacks in that spread offense.”

The Mississippi State ground game has proven to be one of the top rushing attacks in the Southeastern Conference. Led by Heisman front runner, Dak Prescott and fellow Bayou Stater Josh Robinson, the Bulldog ground and pound has been tough to contain. Dan Mullen's team is averaging just over 264 yards per contest, which ranks 12th nationally and second only to Georgia in the SEC.

For years he labored and learned and longed to play the level of game Gabe Jackson did. Just look how the situation has changed for Ben Beckwith and fellow Mississippi State seniors. “Now I think we’ve picked our game up trying to make guys want to be more like us as they come through. You know, want guys to say they try to be like Ben Beckwith, or Dillon Day or Blaine Clausell.”

When it comes to cultivating quarterbacks, Mississippi State's Dan Mullen has one of the best track records in all of college football. With multiple first round picks, a Heisman trophy winner and a pair of national championships, it is hard to argue against the "Mullen system". Mullen's current signal caller, Dak Prescott, is considered the front runner for the Heisman.

It looked like a longer break on paper. The reality was different according to Dak Prescott. And in a good way for anyone concerned a bye-week might take some of Mississippi State’s edge. “We’ve only had two or three days off. So we’ve got a little momentum from last week even not playing a game.”

"We've Got To Be A Much Better Team"

"We've Got To Be A Much Better Team"

“A good bye-week for us last week. We were able to get some guys rested, able to work on some things that need work. Obviously there’s a lot of things we can improve on as a team and really some fundamental stuff that gets lost every once in a while. Really that training camp mentality, when you’re working fundamentals and a lot of techniques.”

For the second straight week, Mississippi State is the consensus #1 team in major college football. With the designation as the top dogs, these Bulldogs expect to get everyone's best shot the rest of the way. The transformation from hunter to hunted is a new role for Dan Mullen's squad, but to hear defensive end Ryan Brown tell it, the Bulldogs are becoming comfortable with their new found fame.
