Russell Tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week

Mississippi State's Tyler Russell holds the distinction of being the most decorated high school quarterback in the history of his home state of Mississippi. After a redshirt year in 2009, the 6-5, 225 pound redshirt freshman began adding honors to his college legacy in just his first week of action. Earlier today the SEC office named Russell the league's freshman of the week.

Tyler completed 13 of 16 passes for 256 yards and tied a school record with four touchdowns passes in this past Saturday's 49-7 win over Memphis.

Russell connected for a pair of scores with both Chad Bumphis and Brandon Heavens who were also members of the Bulldogs 2009 signing class that ranked #19 nationally.

As a prep star for Coach Larry Weems at Meridian High, Tyler was named 1st Team All-State, Dandy Dozen by the Clarion Ledger, Mississippi's Mr. Football, Mississippi's Gatorade Player of the Year and a Parade All-American.

Tyler was also selected to the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game and won the 5A State championship over national power South Panola.

Russell is expected to see action again later this week when Mississippi State hosts Auburn on Thursday at 6:30 PM.

The contest will be nationally televised by ESPN. Recommended Stories
