Lightning halted the opening game of Mississippi State’s weekend series at Alabama, and now both the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide will await a Saturday morning decision of when to resume play. If the team can return to the field, host Alabama will be leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

The Friday game began as scheduled despite threatening conditions, and Alabama was able to leave Bulldog first baseman Connor Powers on base after his two-out single in the top of the frame. State starter Caleb Reed plunked the leadoff Tide batter Taylor Dugas to begin the bottom half of the frame, walked the bases full with two outs, and gave up a sacrifice-fly ball to Jon Kelton. With a 2-2 count, game management halted play at 6:58 as lightning had flashed within the six-mile limit set by the SEC.

Initially play was to resume around 8:00 but with more weather popping up to the west officials called a postponement at 8:39. There will be a Saturday morning meeting of game management and the team officials to set a projected re-start time, which could be as early as 5:00. The goal is to complete the full nine innings as required by the SEC in time to start game-two before 10:00pm. If the game can begin prior to that league deadline, it could continue as long as necessary to complete the full nine innings.

Other options are, if game-one isn’t finished Saturday it will by SEC policy resume Sunday at noon and play to nine-inning completion; with a seven-inning game two. If game-one is finished Saturday, but game-two can’t begin before 10:00pm, there will be a pair of seven-inning games at noon Sunday.
