Pelham High School junior right-handed pitcher Trevor Fitts, a five-star recruit according to the Alabama Top Prospects website, committed to Mississippi State Wednesday. He talked about his commitment.

"I committed to Mississippi State today," said Trevor, MSU's first class of 2011 commitment. "I kept thinking about it and prayed about it, my family has prayed about it. And we just felt like Mississippi State was the best place for me to go."

The Mississippi State coaches were really excited to hear from Trevor.

"I called (assistant) Coach (Butch) Thompson and told him," said the youngster. "He congratulated me and handed the phone to (head) Coach (John) Cohen. Coach Cohen congratulated me and said he couldn't wait for me to come back up there. He wants me to come back to at least another football game and some basketball games. He just wants to get me back on campus. They just talked about how pumped up they were and ready to start playing."

He gave the reasons why Mississippi State won out over an offer from Alabama and heavy interest from Auburn and Jacksonville State.

"I just feel like (assistant) Coach (Butch) Thompson is the best pitching coach in the SEC, and I wanted to play for the best pitching coach in the SEC," said Trevor. "And they have a great field that they are building. And the locker room they have coming in is going to be great. It's definitely a baseball school."

He has a family member who knows about the tradition first-hand - his dad.

"My dad went to Mississippi State and my mom went to Alabama," said Trevor. "My dad was happy about it. And my mom was happy about it, too, but you could tell that she had a soft spot for Alabama for me. But she was happy that we found a great school for me to go to."

Trevor may be the earliest baseball commitment in Mississippi State baseball history. He explained his reasoning behind committing so early in the recruiting process.

"I just felt like this was something that I couldn't pass up - a great baseball school with a great tradition in baseball," said Trevor. "They average a bunch of people per game. And I've always wanted to play for a big crowd. I really get into that - the bigger the crowd, the better it is. Plus, I just felt at home big-time when I was at Mississippi State."

Trevor explained the main advantage of committing early.

"Now, I basically can go out and focus on trying to win a state champion," he said. Or possibly two potential state championships since he's still just a junior in high school.
