Mississippi State wrapped up the ‘training camp’ portion of preseason practices with an extended Friday evening session. Particularly extended, that is, for the offensive skill players on the roster. Because while the specialists and defense were leaving the field around 10:30, most runners, throwers, and catchers were not excused until after 11:00.

Coach Dan Mullen explained it as partly due to Friday’s practice beginning a little later than planned. And partly because there was so much the coaching staff wanted to get done this time out, working in partial-pads. “We did a lot tonight. Really cleaned-up a bunch of special teams things, and did kind of a ‘mock game’ that took a little time. And things like how we substitute guys on-and-off the field, and everything from running out on the field to on-side kicks.”

Given the late ending-hour, Mullen did not have a lot to say about the session. He did report that first center J. C. Brignone is being protected as planned after hurting an ankle Wednesday, but the junior is supposed to be back in the routine Monday when game-week work begins. Freshman WR Chad Bumphis, out for two weeks with a foot injury, is also due back Monday. Otherwise, “Everybody is still right on track,” Mullen said. He also offered an update on first guard Tobias Smith, who had a procedure on an ankle after one week of camp.

“We’re hoping to get Tobias back a week from Monday, for Auburn game week,” Mullen said.

The Bulldogs, players and staff, will be at the Palmeiro Center tomorrow by noon for Fan Day 2009. The event lasts to 2:00. Around that, Mullen said there will be morning team meetings, then team and individual photos taken for the game program along with video headshots for TV use. “Joe (Galbraith) has a full day planned for us tomorrow,” said the coach of the football media relations director. “He’s running the show.”

For his part Galbraith updated the latest season ticket sales, with 40,186 total as of the close of Friday business. That smashes the old MSU mark and is the first time that 40,000 ducats have been sold before or during a season. Of this total, 10,499 were student tickets sold this week.
