MSU-Arkansas Game Suspended with Hogs Leading

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Steady rainfall in northwest Arkansas Friday night forced a suspension of the opening game between Mississippi State and Arkansas at Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks built up a 10-3 advantage over the Bulldogs in the fifth inning when play was halted at 8:11 p.m. by the home plate umpire. The game will be completed Saturday at 2:05 p.m. and followed by the series’ second game.

Arkansas, ranked ninth nationally, struck for three runs in the first inning, the first on a solo home run by Scott Lyons. Jet Butler doubled and scored on an infield groundout in the second and Connor Powers’ sacrifice fly plated another run in the top of the third when the Bulldogs closed the gap to 3-2 against Razorback lefty Dallas Keuchel.

The Razorbacks struck quickly in the home half of the third, sending 10 batters to the plate in a seven-run uprising. Travis Temple opened the scoring spree with a two-run home run and Ryan Cisterna capped the frame with a three-run blast.

All 10 runs (eight earned) were charged to freshman Devin Jones, a late substitute for State’s scheduled Friday starter Tyler Whitney.

Senior righty Lee Swindle came on to record the final two outs in the third inning and was on the mound when play was halted in the fifth.

Cody Freeman and Frank Rawdow paced the Bulldogs with two hits each.
