STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State’s Connor Powers drove in a career-high six runs and homered twice as the Bulldogs knocked off Nicholls 10-8 in the opening game of a college baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.

In the second game, the Bulldogs ran their win streak to five games and completed the doubleheader sweep by taking a 6-3 victory.

The junior first baseman Powers also continued his monster day in the second contest. Powers had three hits and drove in another run, giving him six hits and seven RBIs for the afternoon.

True freshman left-hander Nick Routt (2-0) sparkled again his second start for the Bulldogs. Rout worked six innings against the Colonels, allowing seven hits and three runs (none earned), with no walks and six strikeouts. Routt has now allowed one earned run in his first 14 innings of work, lowering his ERA to 0.64 in the process.

The Bulldogs built a 4-0 lead early in the second game. That lead was taken on a sacrifice fly by Connor Powers, a solo home run by Cody Freeman, an RBI-single by Russ Sneed and a bases-loaded walk to Ryan Collins.

Sneed, a junior third baseman, also had a strong afternoon for the Bulldogs. Sneed had a 4-for-8 day, taking over the team’s batting average lead with a .440 mark.

Chad Crosswhite threw three innings of no-hit, shutout relief. Thanks to a pickoff of an inherited runner, Crosswhite only faced eight batters while earning his second save.

In the second contest, the Bulldogs finished with 11 hits, including three by Nick Hardy and three by Connor Powers.

In the opener, Connor Powers hit a thee-run home run during a four-run first inning for MSU. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 7-0 with three more scores in the second inning. Connor Powers had a two-run single in that at-bat.

The Colonels slowly rallied, scoring once in the fourth inning and three times in both the fifth and sixth innings. MSU scored in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Sneed. Ryan Powers had an RBI-single in the fifth inning and Connor Powers homered for a second time in the sixth inning.

Michael Busby (1-0) worked the final 4-2/3 innings to record the win. Ricky Bowen started for the Bulldogs and was chased during Nicholls’ three-run fourth inning. Greg Houston threw a shutout ninth inning to record his first save.

Connor Powers and Sneed each had three hits for the Bulldogs, who finished with 11 hits in this contest as well.

MSU will close out its season-opening nine-game homestand by hosting Nicholls at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
