Mississippi State and Jackson State will meet on the football field in 2009, as the season-opener for both programs. The Tigers come to Scott Field on September 5 in the first-ever game played between teams from the Southeastern Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. "This is a historic event for college football in the State of Mississippi," MSU athletics director Greg Byrne said.

"And we feel it's a great way to kick off the 2009 season." Jackson State replaces Louisiana Tech on State's 2009 slate, on that same date. The return game with Tech instead moves to the 2012 season.
