Where and when is the MSU Ladies Football 101 Clinic going to be held?
"Registration begins this coming Friday morning at 8 and goes until 9 at the Shira/Holliman Athletic Center. As far as registration goes, we would prefer that people pre-register for the clinic, but if they can't, they can still register the morning of the clinic. The cost is $100.
"People can park in the parking lot between the Shira/Holliman Athletic Center and the tennis courts, which is directly across from the north end of the Bryan Building. If that parking lot is full they can also park in the parking area south of the Bryan Building. Registration will be on the indoor turf field of the Shira/Holliman Athletic Center. Ladies should enter the building through the roll-up door in the back of the building."
Once registration is complete, what happens?
"There will be an introduction of the Mississippi State football staff. After that, the offensive staff will do a presentation from 9:30 to 11:00.
"From 11:00 to 11:45, our guest speaker, Deanna Favre, will speak to the ladies. After that, we will serve lunch from 12:00 to 1:00"
Will Deanna be available after her speech to discuss one-on-one her Deanna Favre HOPE Foundation, a charitable organization designed to assist those who are underserved or underinsured in their battle against breast cancer?
"There will be a question and answer session at the end of her presentation where the ladies can ask her about her foundation. And she will be here about 30 minutes prior to presentation. Of course, if she chooses to, she has the option to stay for lunch if her travel schedule allows her that opportunity. So, there should be plenty of opportunities for people to ask her their questions."
I see the catering is going to be really special this year? It's provided by a restaurant that Mary Ann and I go to quite often.
"Eric Halberg and his staff at Cappe's are doing all of our catering, not only for our clinic but for our summer camp meals as well. They have recently expanded this services to include catering. And from everything that I have heard about them, they are doing a fabulous job. Eric is a big supporter of our athletic programs, and he has found yet another way to help our program, and we are very appreciative of that."
Looking at the itinerary for the clinic, I noticed two special treats for the ladies immediatly after lunch.
"After the lunch we will have two 30-minute sessions with what we feel are two very special people in our football program. From 1:15 to 1:45 we will have our sophomore-to-be starting quarterback Wesley Carroll answer questions from the ladies. We thought that would be a good way for the ladies to get an inside perspective of our program from the vantage point of a guy who, as a freshman, has been exposed to a lot of things, including helping lead our team to not only an 8-5 season and a bowl game, but a bowl win.
"He is a very well-spoken and articulate young man who has emerged as one of the leaders on this team. I really think the ladies will enjoy talking to him because he has a lot of insight to offer."
Can they ask him anything they want to, not only about football, but college life in general, maybe even ask him about his long hair and ear rings (laugh)?
"They can ask him anything they want. I can't guarantee you that he will answer every question, but they can sure ask them (laugh)."
I think the ladies will find the next guy on the itinerary to be a very special treat as well.
"I think so, too. From 1:45 to 2:15 (MSU Head) Coach (Sylvester) Croom will do the same thing as Wes. In the past, he has spoken at the clinic, but this year he's going to do a very laid back question and answer session with them. This will give the ladies an opportunity to see a side of him that they often don't see in the media and during games."
Once Coach Croom is through, there is a break from 2:15 to 2:30. What happens next?
"Our defensive coaches will give a defensive presentation that will last from 2:30 to 4:00."
Will the coaches presentations, both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, be similar to football 101 or be a little more advanced than that?
"There will be a lot of 101 type material, then a little more advanced material after that. It will be a good mix that will be very informative for the ladies in attendance. And it won't just be teaching, but they will be doing some speaking as well. And if any lady has a question at any time during the session, they can ask them anytime they want to just as if they are in a classroom setting."
I see, from looking at the itinerary, there is another special treat in store for the ladies near the end of the clinic.
"What you are referring to is something we added in 2006. It's an on-the-field presentation on our indoor practice field inside the Shira Fieldhouse that will involve any lady who wants to be a part of it. The ladies will go through a light stretching session with our head strength coach Ben Pollard that will be similar to what our players go through prior to each practice. While it is athletic in nature, it should be understood that no extenuating athletic activity will be involved."
"After that, we will break them into two groups, offense and defense. They get to choose which side of the ball they want to be on. Then, our offensive and defensive coaches will walk them through some of the things they learned in the earlier sessions. In other words, they get to apply what they have learned. And, at the end of that session, they will actually get to walk through a couple of our plays.
"This session is designed so that they get a feel what it's like to be out there with the coaches during a practice."
What if there are some ladies that prefer to watch instead of participate in the on-the-field presentation?
"It's all voluntary. If someone wants to watch, they are more than welcome to. We want this clinic to be fun for everyone, whether they are watching or participating."
Will the ladies need to bring any pen, pencils or notebooks or will all those things be provided?
"We will provide everything. They will get a notebook and a pen. And there will be some other small gifts they will receive throughout the day as well."
I noticed that there will be a raffle at the conclusion of the clinic that the ladies can also pay for when they first register in addition to their clinic fees. What are some of the things that will be raffled?
"The ladies can buy chances to the raffle at the time of registration. This is a good way to provide the ladies an opportunity to win unique prizes they can't go to a store and purchase."
"We have five pretty unique items. We will have two adidas footballs that will be autographed by all of our football coaches. In addition to those, we will also have one game-worn helmet that will be also be autographed by our staff. We also have two football season tickets that will be raffled off as a set. A new gift that we are adding is one room, one night, Friday night stay at the team hotel when our team travels to Atlanta on Sept. 19-20 for the Georgia Tech game. Our team and travel party will be staying at the Ritz Carlton downtown, which will be quite a treat for everyone involved. Included in that gift are two game tickets."
For those of you who are interested in either registering for the clinic or just want to know more about it you can call the Bulldog football office at 662-325-2534.
