Mississippi State-Memphis game notes.
Memphis had 7 drives in the second half. Three of the seven were ended by interceptions. The other four were punted away. MSU's defense, during the past 2 games (Memphis and Troy State), has had 8 interceptions in the 2nd half to stop of 8 of 14 drives.
MSU had possession of the ball 20 minutes and 4 seconds in the second half. Memphis had the ball 8 minutes and 56 seconds during the same half.
MSU's five top tacklers for the game were the five starting defensive backs. Gholar had 8 tackles (7 solos), Williams 6, Morgan 5, Dockery 5 and Banks 4 (tied with 2 others).
After recording just 1 interception the first five games of the season, MSU has now had 11 interceptions in their last 2 games.
Redshirt freshman quarterback
Kyle York
started his second game of his career - both were road games - and is now 1-1.
Senior running back
Justin Griffith
played the game despite hurting both ankles.
In the last two games,
Brent Smith
has made 4 of 6 field goals. He missed a 52 yarder and a 41 yarder.
Robert Wallis
has punted the ball 13 times in the last two games, averaging 46.6 yards per punt.
The attendance for the game was 28,209.
Due to the deafening sound of the 5 cowbells that MSU fans brought into the stadium, University of Memphis officials had security go into the stands and take them away. Three of the five were found. MSU fans, due to the loss of their 3 cowbells, used keys to make artificial noise. Although the sound of keys jingling was obviously deafening, inexplicably, none were reported to have been taken up by security. (Just a joke, folks. I'm just poking fun at Memphis for coming into the stands to get the few cowbells MSU fans brought in.-Gene)
