MSU Loses to Austin Peay, 3-2

Tyler Whitney throws seven strong innings

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Jake Lane hit a pair of home runs, including the walk-off, game-winner in the 11th inning, to propel Austin Peay State past Mississippi State 3-2 Tuesday night.

APSU gained the first lead of the night in the fourth inning at 2-0 when Lane connected on a two-run homer. State's Edward Easley trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the sixth with his 12th round tripper of the season.

The score stayed that way until the top of the ninth. With two outs and a runner on second base, Bulldog freshman Brandon Turner stepped to the plate in a pinch-hitting role. On a 3-2 count, Turner singled to score pinch runner Michael Rutledge and knot the score at 2-2.

After an out in the bottom of the 11th, Lane then stepped to the plate and sent an 0-2 pitch out to left field.

Bulldog rookie left-hander Tyler Whitney had another solid outing, but did not figure in the decision Tuesday. He pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, walking one and striking out seven. John Lalor suffered the loss, pitching the final 3 1/3 innings and allowing only one run - the home run to Lane in the 11th.
