Pearl River Roughs Up Mississippi Delta 43-6

The Pearl River Community College Wildcats handed the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans a 43-6 season opening loss Thursday night at Moorhead and showed just why they are ranked No.1 in the nation in pre-season polls. The Wildcats took advantage of Mississippi Delta mistakes and several lapses by the defensive secondary to take 22-0 halftime lead into the locker room.

Pearl River quarterback Mike Greco, a transfer from North Carolina State University, put on a passing display in the first half opening the scoring with a 42-yard strike to wide receiver Demetrius Byrd with just three minutes gone in the opening quarter. The Cats opted to go for two and failed giving them a 6-0 lead.

The Trojans responded with a 10-play drive from their own 32 to the Pearl River 15-yard line before a fumble by running back Justus Anderson turned the ball over to the Wildcats. This would be the closest the Trojans would come to scoring in the first half.

Pearl River's second score came with 8:25 left in the second quarter on a one-yard pass from Greco to J.J. Smith. The TD pass capped a seven play drive that covered 63 yards. The score was set up by a 62-yard pass from Greco and the drive was set up when Delta quarterback Travis McGee was intercepted at the Delta 42. Another two-point PAT attempt failed leaving the score 12-0.

The Wildcats made it 19-0 five minutes later when running back Seth Hayden rambled through the middle of the Trojan's defense for a 51-yard TD. This drive covered 73 yards in five plays and this time kicker Brad Bingham hit the extra point to give the Cats a 19-0 lead.

Another Travis McGee interception, this one at the Mississippi Delta 25, gave Pearl River one more scoring opportunity before halftime. The Wildcats had to settle for a Brad Bingham 40-yard field goal and lead 22-0 at the break.

The Wildcats opened the second half with a five play , 29 yard drive that saw Hayden score on a one-yard run. The drive was set up by a Trojans' fumble on their own 28. The PAT kick bounced off the upright and gave Pearl River a 28-0 lead with 13:24 remaining in the third quarter.

The Trojans collected their only points of the night just three minutes later when Travis McGee connected with wide receiver Mark Farrell on a 71-yard pass play . James Reed' PAT sailed wide and the Cats lead 28-6.

Pearl River would add two more touchdowns, one on a 26-yard pass by Greco and the last on a 60-yard run by Hayden to bring the final score to 43-6.

For the night, the Wildcats' quarterback was 15-25 for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Seth Hayden rushed five times for 124 yards and two TD's. The Wildcats rushed 21 times for 127 yards and hit 16 of 28 passes for 265 yards for 392 yards of total offense.

The Trojans Travis McGee was 8-19 for 126 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Mississippi Delta rushed 31 times for 77 yards for 203 yards of total offense. McGee rushed 14 times for 37 yards and was followed by Eddie Love with eight carries for 26 yards.

Mississippi Delta will be on the road next Thursday night at Decatur as they take on East Central Community College at 6:30 p.m.
