West Lauderdale (MS) High School catcher Cody Freeman, who led the state of Mississippi in home runs this past season with 16, has received his first scholarship offer. What school extended the offer?

Cody, who recently tried out for the southeast team that will play in the East Coast Professional Showcase in Wilmington, North Carolina in July, received the offer after the tryout. The tryout was held on the Mississippi State baseball field.

"(Mississippi) State offered me Wednesday after the tryout," said Cody, who batted .480 with 61 RBI in 30+ games this past season. "We went and ate after the tryout, then came back and talked with their coaches after that. (MSU head) Coach (Ron) Polk talked with me and my family about coming to State. Then, he offered me. It surprised me that I received an offer."

The MSU coaches explained why he is such an important part of this coming year's recruiting class.

"They told me that they will have two senior catchers next year and Ed Easley will be a draft-eligible junior and they will really need a catcher," said the powerful right-handed hitting catcher.

Obviously MSU is very interested in him. What schools are showing the most interest in him?

"(Mississippi) State is probably showing the most interest. Then Ole Miss, Southern (Miss) and Alabama," said Cody.

What schools are at the top of his recruiting list?

"I am probably most interested in State, then Southern and Ole Miss and then Alabama," said the 6-0, 175-pounder. "State is probably first, then Southern, Ole Miss and then Alabama."

He explained why the three in-state schools lead Alabama. And he also explained why MSU is at the top.

"I really want to stay and play in-state. I am a State fan," said Cody.

With an offer already on the table, does he plan on committing early or will he wait until July 1st, the first day that college coaches can call recruits?

"I am not going to commit until at least after July 1st to see how much interest other schools show," said Cody.

Will MSU eventually receive his commitment or will another school pull an upset? Keep it on Scout.com to find out.
