Norwood Earns Cellular South Conerly Award

Posted Dec 1, 2005

JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi State senior running back Jerious Norwood was presented the Cellular South Conerly Award Wednesday evening, earning the honor at the trophy's annual banquet, being held at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The trophy goes to Mississippi's top college football player each year.

Norwood ran for 1,136 yards and six touchdowns this season, 204 yards and three scores coming in the Bulldogs' season-ending, 35-14 win over rival Mississippi in the Egg Bowl this past Saturday.

The Brandon, Miss., native rushed for 1,000-plus yards in back-to-back seasons in his junior and senior campaigns, becoming only the second Bulldog ever to do so. The other was James "JJ" Johnson, who did so in 1997 and 1998. Johnson is also the only previous Bulldog to earn the Conerly Award in its now-10-year history.

Norwood became State's career rushing leader midway through this season. He finally wound up his career with 3,222 total yards on the ground, eclipsing Walter Packer's previous mark of 2,820 yards which was set in the 1970s. Norwood also finished with the most 100-yard games in MSU lore, his 13th coming on Saturday with his performance against the Rebels.
