Alex Carpenter Profile:
Carpenter knew, going into Sunday's Mississippi State Junior/Senior Day Camp, that there was a good chance that Mississippi State would offer soon afterwards.
"They said they were probably going to offer," said Carpenter, who has been named the MVP for Division 8 (1A) for three straight years. "I think it was something like a 90% chance that they would offer."
What did he think about his MSU camp performance?
"I thought I did pretty good," said Carpenter, who ran a 4.62 forty, vertical leaped 37 inches and had a 9-3 broad jump at the May 1st Scout.com combine at Starkville, Mississippi.
And it appears, based on what the MSU coach who is recruiting said to him while at the camp, that the MSU coaches also thought he did well.
"They liked what I did a lot," said Carpenter, who has rushed for over 4,000 yards during his career. "(MSU tight ends) Coach (Reed) Stringer is recruiting me. He said he liked a lot of things about me, my ability to play. He liked everything about me."
Once he left the camp, what happened while on his ride back home?
"Coach Stringer called my coach and they talked for awhile," said Carpenter. "Then, he wanted to talk to me. He had wanted me to call him when I got home, but he wound up calling me in the van (on the way home). He said there was a meeting after the camp was over where (the MSU coaches) talked about everything. Then, he wound up calling me and said that they were offering me."
What was his reaction to the offer?
"I said yes because that was where I wanted to go anyway," said Carpenter, a fan of MSU growing up.
Has MSU told him their plans for him once he's on campus next season?
"I'll probably play wide receiver at Mississippi State," said Carpenter, who accounted for 19 touchdowns and 1,815 yards at RB/QB last season. "They also like me at safety on defense if I play defense. They don't really know, yet."
"I am excited about it," said Carpenter, of his first official scholarship offer. "There has only been one other dude from Biggersville who played D-I ball and that was like 25 years ago. He also played at State."
