Jordan King, a 6-0, 178-pound righthanded pitcher/infielder who plays for Northwest Rankin High School in Brandon, is one of 20 Mississippi high school baseball players who will be playing for the Mississippi Stars baseball team at the Junior Sunbelt Classic Tournament in McAlester, Oklahoma June 10th-15th.

The Stars are heavily counting on King's right arm to help them bring back the championship of the Junior Sunbelt Classic. And he's definitely got the pitching repertoire to do it.

"The velocity of my fastball topped out at 90, although I throw 87-88 most of the time," said Jordan King, who won the state class 5A championship game this past season. "I also throw a slider and a curveball. My out pitch is normally my curveball because it has a pretty quick break. I also throw a changeup."

Not only does he have the "stuff", but he also has the experience that will keep him from being intimated by the competition that he will face in Oklahoma.

"I started at third base my sophomore year," said King. "I also pitched 20 innings, was 2 and 0, and started about 9 games at shortstop. The rest of the time I started at third."

While he played a lot in the field, he didn't get to pitch as many innings as he would have liked, but there was a reason for that.

"We had 4 really good starters my sophomore year," said King. "My junior year, it was Todd McInnis and me as the number 1 and 2 guys."

An once he was put into the pitching rotation, he came on strong.

"Pitching, I was 9 and 2 with a 2.00 era and, I think, 90 strikeouts in 70 innings," said King, who also hit .290 with 2 home runs and 15 RBIs.

While pitching appears to be his strength, he also enjoys hitting and hopes to contribute both on the mound and at the plate on the collegiate level.

"I would like to do both," said King. "I feel like my hitting is stronger than I showed this year. I kind of slumped this year. I did better my sophomore year. I batted about .300 and hit 2 home runs. I'm corrected some kinks that I had in my swing. The hitting coach with the Mississippi Stars team has worked with me and has really helped me out. I now feel a lot more confident at the plate."

Teams have taken noticed of his exploits the past two seasons, especially the local schools and, at least, one out of state school.

"I've received letters from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, the University of Memphis and the University of Southern Miss," said King. "Coach McDonald from Ole Miss has contacted me."

A couple of those schools appear to be recruiting him a little harder than the other two.

"Ole Miss has sent me a bunch of newsletters as to how they have been doing during their baseball season," said King. "The University of Memphis invited me to their Junior Day. I got to watch a game up there and meet Coach Schoenrock and their pitching coach. But, I like all the schools that are recruiting me right now."

Does he have an early favorite list?

"I would like to play for Mississippi State or Ole Miss, but Memphis is also a good school that I would enjoy going to," said King.

However, at this point, one school seems to have the advantage over the other three schools.

"My dad has always been a Mississippi State fan, so I kind of followed him," said King. "Mississippi State is my team."
