Q & A with MSU WR Coach Guy Holliday

Posted Apr 19, 2004

Mississippi State wide receiver's coach Guy Holliday discusses who has come out of the spring as his top receiver, how his young guys looked, and how much his receiving corps have improved since last spring.

Talk about the improvement in senior McKinley Scott this spring. He is a guy that has really stepped up this spring.
"We need a horse every year. And McKinley (Scott) is the horse right now. We are going to ride him. And we will have another one in the stable ready to jump in when he leaves."

(Redshirt freshman) Jason Husband looked good in Saturday's scrimmage.
"Jason had a good spring. And I'm really happy for him. He sat out all spring with a toe injury. To come out and make the two good catches that he did, it really helps us. He is a big target and really gives us another option."

Will (redshirt freshman) Joey Sanders figure in your depth chart next season?
"Without a doubt. Joey had a great spring. Joey, until he pulled his hamstring last Thursday, was really coming on. I am really excited about him and his development. He showed us that he can catch a ball in the crowd."

Does it help that Joey and QB Omarr Conner have been playing together going back to junior high?
"That helps tremendously. People don't understand that a lot of catching the football is understanding how it comes out of the quarterback's hands, the rotation of the ball. And Joey has been catching Omarr's passes for years, so there is a level of comfort there."

How much have the receivers improved, not just this spring but since last spring?
"The biggest thing with us is we are developing a work ethic. If you work hard, you are going to get better. I think, top to bottom, we are better than we were last year. Do we have one standout guy? I think we have one in McKinley Scott."

Now that the NCAA investigation is about over, how much will that help the coaches as far as recruiting is concerned?
"When you definitely know what is going on, nobody can throw out the unknown against you. Anytime you are dealing with the unknown, it is all speculation. Once we know if there are any penalties, we can present that to a player and tell him here it is and this is what we are going to do about it. It's in black and white, so it makes it easy."
