"I was kind of sad that we didn't get to play. It was crazy but it's the SEC, anybody can win on any given Saturday. There are a lot of good teams and you saw what could happen." I guess the past couple of days you have gotten some pretty serious Kentucky prep. "Yeah, we are getting ready, getting focused, getting locked in, getting our preparation for these guys. They are a good defense. They do some good things. But we are just worried about ourselves and getting et better." When you watched that game Saturday, did you think about being ahead of Auburn for 59 minutes and they just went to Texas A&M and won and you think we can beat anybody, too, with the remaining schedule that you have? "Like I said, it's the SEC, any team can go out there and win if you play your A game. You never know what comes up at the end. You just have to go hard and hope for the best." Was it a good time for you to go back and evaluate what you did well and what you need to work on during the first six games of the season? "It was a good time to go back and evaluate and have the time to fix some things that I haven't been so good at. It was a time where I could see where I am at since the beginning of the season." What are some things that you have done well? "I think I have stayed calm throughout the games, kept my composure. But there are a lot of things that I can do better." What do you see from Kentucky's defense this year as opposed to last year? "Their linebackers do an alright job going from side to side. But I don't think they do that much different. It's all about us executing." Jameon Lewis seems to be catching a lot more passes the past three games. Have you noticed a difference in him during those three games? "It's not something that I have noticed (because) I trust all of my guys. When the ball is released from my hand I expect them to catch it, and they expect to catch it as well. It's the trust that we have here. "He's had some big games the past three games. I've definitely noticed that." Is there a chemistry between the two of you? "Yeah, I know when he's breaking out of his cuts. That comes from spending time with him during practice. We are getting the feel for each other." A lot of us didn't really appreciate how a beat up offensive line soldiered through the Bowling Green game. "We had some young guys come in and play and some other guys play banged up. They did alright against Bowling Green. Bowling Green played hard against us but our guys came out on top." Will it be good to see those guys get healthy for the second half of the season? "Most definitely. It was a good bye week for us to get healthy and fix things across the board." What does the Mississippi State linebacking group do so well that allows them to disrupt offenses? "They are big and fast and do a good job of flying around. They act like they are blitzing and the next thing you know they are dropping off in their zones. They do a good job of disguising things." Who are some guys on the scout defense that have jumped out at you and makes you think they will be the guys who will be making plays next year? "There are some good DBs. Gabe Myles does a good job. We have some good young linebackers and some guys upfront. We have a lot of good young guys who can play for us next year." You were already young coming in this year. And some other young guys have been focused in to play due to injuries. Is that good for the future of the program? "Definitely, because it gives them game reps and confidence. That's something that you don't get from practice. You just don't get that unless you are going against another team. It's good for those guys." When you watched film of Kentucky, did you think are they really just 1 and 5, because they are doing some really good things on both sides of the ball and don't really look like a 1-5 team? "Exactly, they play hard and do a lot of good things. They just haven't been able to come out on top. They've played some good teams and they have played them hard to the end. They aren't a 1-5 ball club." Kentucky is a permanent team from the east for Mississippi State. Do you see it as a rivalry game or is it just another team on the schedule? "Every game is the same. But I understand what you are saying. They are a team that we see every year. It's good to finally have them at home because every year that I've been here we have been going to Kentucky." Have you seen the video of Anthony Dixon where he says he's grinding for his state? If so, do you think about Kentucky when you see it? "We don't think about it that way. It's something that AD came up with it and he was having fun grinding. Yeah, we like to go off of that." You and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel are similar in the fact that you are both good passers who also happen to be good runners. Do you see the similarities between you and him? "Yeah, we are both dual-threat quarterbacks. Like you said, that comes from being able to throw the ball and run the ball. Johnny does a lot of good things. And I like to watch him and see how he carries himself on the football field and how he throws some passes. There are some good things to learn from him." What are some specific things that you have learned from him? "I just like to watch how he carries himself on the field and in between plays. And how he tries to play for his guys. I just like the demeanor that he carries out on the field." Gene Swindoll is the publisher of the GenesPage.com website, the source for Mississippi State sports on Scout.com sports network.
