Recommended by Padres Area Scout Andrew Salvo, Hunter Renfroe hit .352 (80-for-227) this past season for the Bulldogs, collecting 15 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 58 RBI, 51 runs scored, nine stolen bases, a .440 on-base percentage and .634 slugging percentage in 59 games played this past season, his junior year. His 15 home runs ranked among the Top 20 across all conferences of NCAA Division I leaders. As a senior in high school in 2010, the right-handed hitter set a Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) record with 20 home runs, hitting .583 with 49 hits, 70 RBI en route to being names MAIS Player of the Year.
Renfroe becomes the second college position player selected by the Padres with their number one overall pick in the last three years, with the other infielder Cory Spangenberg (10th overall) in 2011. The 21-year-old was rated as the top corner outfielder and 11th-best prospect by Baseball America among all players in the 2013 Draft class.
"He has a chance to be an above-average right fielder," McDonald said. "He has plus raw power to the pull side and also above average hit tool with good bat speed and bat control."
In the second round, the club selected infielder Dustin Peterson 50th overall out of Gilbert High School (AZ). Recommended by Padres Area Scout Dave Lottsfeldt, the 18-year-old shortstop hit for a .540 batting average (47-for-87) with a .583 on-base pct. and 1.149 slugging pct. with 11 doubles, six triples, 10 home runs and 39 RBI in 28 games for the Tigers during his senior campaign. Peterson was rated by Baseball America as the 61st-best prospect in the 2013 Draft field and is committed to attend Arizona State University in the fall.
With the 69th overall selection in the Competitive Balance Round B, the club selected outfielder Jordan Paroubeck out of Serra High School (CA). Recommended by area scout Sam Ray, the switch-hitting 18-year-old posted a .402 batting average (41-for-102) with a .540 on-base pct. and a .775 slugging pct. with 13 doubles, two triples and seven home runs in 34 games for the Padres of Serra High School. The San Mateo, CA native was rated by Baseball America as the 62nd-best prospect in the 2013 Draft field and is committed to attend Fresno State University in the fall.
The 40-round draft will continue tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. PT with rounds 3-10 and will conclude on Saturday, June 8, with rounds 11-40.
