Friday night's game went just half an inning due to rain, and Bobby Wahl, who had started for Ole Miss, was saved for the Sunday start. Mike Mayers picked up and pitched masterfully the rest of the way - almost.
Brett Huber came in to make things interesting in the ninth with the Rebels up 3-0. Bulldogs were on first and third with two outs when pinch hitter Mitch Slauter struck out looking, much to the chagrin of MSU head coach John Cohen, who let the umps have it all the way off the field.
The Rebels had gotten on the board in the fifth inning on a Will Allen solo home run to left field.
In the sixth, Stuart Turner and Andrew Mistone had back to back singles with two outs, and MSU brought in Ross Mitchell to replace starter Luis Pollorena and face Auston Bousfield. Mitchell balked the runners to second and third, and Bousfield then walked to load the bases.
Mitchell then walked Orvis for a 2-0 UM lead. But Preston Overbey grounded out to shortstop to keep things right there after six complete.
Allen, 2-for-3, led off the seventh and Cameron Dishon came in to pinch run. Christian Helsel got him to second on a hit and run ground out. There was another pitch change for MSU, this time in the form of Chad Girodo, and Tanner Mathis struck out. Austin Anderson did the same, and it remained 2-0 after seven innings.
After Stuart Turner sent one almost out of the park to right but was caught by the MSU rightfielder, it was Mistone, 2-for-4 on the day, and Bousfield with back to back singles. Orvis then walked to load the bases. Austin Knight pinch hit and his sac fly to right got another run home for a 3-0 Rebel lead.
That's when Huber came in to start the ninth and immediately walked Hunter Renfroe. Brett Pirtle flew out to left. Wes Rea struck out swinging, and as the ball got away from the catcher, Renfroe scooted to second. During C.T. Bradford's at-bat, Huber threw a wild pitch as Renfroe got to third; then Bradford walked.
Then Slauter came up and ended things with the K, and Huber had his 11th save of the season and 27th of his record-setting Ole Miss career.
Mayers got the win and is 4-4. MSU starter Luis Pollorena got the loss and is 6-3.
