"Ole Miss is my latest offer," Angel said. "They offered
me last week. Tennessee, Vandy and Mississippi State have also offered me."
How did the Ole Miss offer go down?
"My 7-on-7 coach told me to call coach (Maurice) Harris. I called him,
and he offered me a scholarship. Coach Harris was excited about me. He watched
my film and said I was a really good player with the ball in my hands. He wants
me to come down to their elite junior day next month so I'm going to go down there to meet up with their coaches."
Angel's teammate on his 7-on-7 team signed with Ole Miss.
"Mark Dodson is always telling me I need to come join him. He's always
talking Ole Miss up to me, but I don't know too much about them yet. I've
never been down there before."
One school he is very familiar with is Vandy.
"It's so close to home, and my granddad is a big Vandy fan. Coach Franklin
is a good coach. He inherited a team that was 2-10 and now he is 9-3 in back-to-back
years. He's turned it around. They have something going on."
Tennessee is also another program he is very familiar with.
"They're excited about me. They don't know which position I'm going
to play yet because I still have three years to play in high school, but I like
Tennessee. I think their new head coach (Butch Jones) has a good plan to turn it around. I
think he's going to be successful."
Mississippi State was his first scholarship offer.
"I like coach (Dan) Mullen. He's a great guy and football coach. They were my
first scholarship offer. That's kind of special. I have gotten to know coach
(Tim) Brewster. They'll be good in the next few years."
Other schools are trying to jump into the picture for the 6' 3",
215-pound freshman.
"Florida State, South Carolina
and Georgia are also sending me a bunch of letters. I've spoken to all of
those college."
Why the recruiting attention at such an early stage?
"They like my size and speed. It was fun getting my feet wet this season.
It's going to help me out a lot for my sophomore year. I have a better feel
for the game now. I know which routes to cover on defense and where to be on
offense."
Which position feels the most natural?
"I feel more natural at running back on offense. Playing the slot is not
bad but I like tailback more. I think I have good hands and catch the ball well
out of the backfield. I have good vision to see in the open field and I make
good cuts."
Angel had 18 carries for 178 yards and five touchdowns and also chipped in seven catches
for 115 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman.
