The Class of 2014 inside Mississippi lacks the star power up top but provides depth and balance…
February Stock Report, Class of 2014
The book may not even be closed on the class of 2013, but we want to get an early jump on the class of 2014. The Eagles have demonstrated that they want to work from the inside out in recruiting, beginning with local prospects close to home. This staff is going to make recruiting in-state a priority, and with a talented batch of prospects for the next class, that is certainly a solid approach. Here is our way to early list of a few names to watch for the class of 2014: -Markell Pack, WR, Purvis: If you want to start looking at an early target, look at a local kid who looks to be a big time play maker. Pack was recently offered by the Eagles, and already holds offers to other in-state schools as well. He's an early target that the Eagles will try to keep close to home. -Jesse Jackson, WR, Petal: The Eagles are seeking to build a pipeline from the Petal program that is right down the road from MM Roberts stadium. The Eagles have landed two highly touted prospects over the past two years from the Panthers, and Jesse is another high target. He's another play maker with a ton of speed and a kid that would be the deep threat the Eagles are looking for in this offense. They have already made the offer, Jackson's first of many that he'll receive, but the Eagles certainly have a good early start on him. -D.K. Buford, RB, Oxford: Southern Miss has shown they can go north of Jackson and land prospects in state. They did so with Oxford's QB, and now they have an early jump on a talented running back. Buford already has a lot of offers, but Southern Miss was one of his first. Oh yeah, he also runs a 4.3. -Roderick Taylor, DT/OG, Callaway HS, Jackson: If the Eagles want to go after the best, Taylor is good place to start. The big man will be one of the most talented players to come out of Mississippi this year, and he's already picked up offers from Alabama, MSU, Ole Miss, and Southern Miss. The Eagles offered very early on the big man, and have been talking with him though it is going to take a lot of work to bring him in. -William Ulmer, QB, St. John's HS, Washington D.C.: The Eagles have identified Ulmer as one of their big targets for next year's class. A dual threat QB, Ulmer is likely to have multiple offers, but the Eagles are going to put their hat in the ring and go after him. Todd Monken has shown he can go get QB's, and if they can get in early on him, Ulmer will be one to watch as they make him a top priority. -A.J. Moore, LB, Bassfield: Moore is a player that fans in south Mississippi will know very well after this season. The Eagles got an early jump on him with a very early offer, and the hard hitting LB will have a long list of suitors. Coach Duggan has already been impressed by this talented prospect, and he could be one of the top LB prospects for the Eagles in this class. -Rejohn Franklin, LB, Gulfport: The Eagles will be looking for LB's and they don't have to go very far for another good one in Franklin. Just south of the Eagles home in Hattiesburg, Franklin could be one that Southern Miss goes after to show they are going to keep these players close to home. Franklin will be one of the state's best as well, and he's already been hearing from the Eagles though we are not sure if they have offered him yet. -C.J. Moore, Ath, Bassfield: Brother of A.J., Calvin or "C.J" is another top priority for the Eagles. Moore is another one that will rise quickly to the top of the charts in the state, as Bassfield brings more and more talented prospects to the front of the scene. -Dontavian Lee, RB, FCAHS, Brooklyn: Lee is going to be one of the top prospects running back wise in the state, and he already has come out and said he wants to stay in state and is interested in Southern Miss. He's 200 lbs. and very fast, and that combination already puts him right at the top of the list for the Eagles who will want to reload at RB this year. -Michael Sam, S, New Iberia, (LA): Sam is a highly touted safety that the Eagles have been evaluating. They are continuing to pursue talent in Louisiana, and I expect what has been some solid players from that state will continue this year even more. He's 6'2, 190, and a hard hitter. He'll continue to grow and develop and has a tremendous upside. -Preston Dedeaux, RB, Picauynne: Dedeaux is the type of back similar to a Jeremy Hester that has both great quickness and power. He's explosive and seems like he'd be a good fit for Monken's system. While he doesn't have an offer, he's certainly being evaluated and we expect that to change. -Picasso Nelson, WR, Oak Grove: Nelson is a guy that Southern Miss had in camp this summer, and also took some visits to campus last fall. He is very interested in Southern Miss, and the last staff had started recruiting him. We'll see if the current staff continues that pursuit of him, but Oak Grove is another local school Southern Miss will keep a very close eye on. -Gerrald McDowell, LB, Covington (LA): At 6'1, 245lbs., McDowell is a star in the making as he continues to grow and develop. There is no doubt linebacker and the hybrid position will be a big need for the Eagles in this coming class. McDowell could be one Southern Miss really takes a hard look at. -Lee Jackson, CB, Natchez: Lee is already starting to hear from several schools and is drawing a lot of early interest from the Eagles. Southern Miss has already been in contact with him though an offer has not come through yet. Here is yet another south MS product that the Eagles will try and reel in. -Ethan Frith, OT, Summitt: Frith has the size that colleges are looking for from a tackle (6'6, 315lbs.) Coaches will be evaluating to see if he has the skills to go with it. He's certainly already turning heads though. -Howard Thomas, DE, Brandon: Thomas is an intriguing prospect because of his potential as a defensive tackle. He's 6'6 and weighs 250 right now, but that will continue to increase as he grows. Thomas said his early interest level includes the in-state schools.
