Wilson Is Latest Defensive Departure

Mississippi State defensive line coach and two-year defensive coordinator Chris Wilson will not return for the 2013 season, according to sources.

Wilson, who joined Coach Dan Mullen’s staff in 2010 as a position coach and was promoted to coordinator for 2011, lost the top defensive post Friday. Co-coordinator and linebackers coach Geoff Collins was promoted to overall coordinator after being handed the responsibility for the Gator Bowl.

At the time Mullen said the bowl change was made for multiple reasons, including the need to have Wilson focus on defensive line rotations against a tempo offense. This type of team was something Mississippi State struggled with in the regular season. While the Bulldogs gave up 34 points in a loss to Northwestern on New Years Day, the general impression was of a more capable defensive scheme that could be built upon in 2013.

Wilson, who turns 44 on January 8, is a Oklahoma graduate and has been coaching since 1994.

Collins, 42 and beginning his third year with State, becomes the fourth defensive coordinator for Mullen.

Mississippi State already has one staff vacancy to fill after the Christmas break departure of cornerbacks coach Melvin Smith to Auburn. Smith did not coach in the bowl game, and his job was taken by safeties coach Tony Hughes.

The college football coaches national convention begins Monday.
