Four current or former Major Leaguers --- Eric DuBose, Paul Maholm, Jay Powell and Craig Tatum are expected to take part in reunion activities. Also returning are several past Diamond Dogs currently playing in professional baseball’s minor leagues --- Ed Easley, Grant Hogue, Jarrod Parks, Connor Powers, Nick Routt and Jared Wesson. The senior returnee in the group is James “Rip” Harper of Carlsbad, Calif., a letterman on Coach C.R. “Dudy” Noble’s 1942 MSU club.
MSU skipper John Cohen, the Bulldog coaching staff and members of the 2013 State baseball team are set to welcome dozens of former Diamond Dogs representing eight decades of Mississippi State baseball for the biennial reunion weekend. Following Friday’s golf event the returnees will be feted at a barbecue dinner at the Cohen home.
The activity continues Saturday at Dudy Noble Field when some of the returning athletes will suit up for a home run derby/batting practice (12 p.m.) and a three-inning alumni game (1 p.m.). Fans are invited to welcome the returning players back to the MSU campus at the game and preview the 2013 Diamond Dogs during a 2:15 p.m. Maroon-White scrimmage, with no charge for admission. A pair of sophomores, southpaw Jacob Lindgren (Bay St. Louis, Miss.) and righty Trevor Fitts (Helena, Ala.) are projected starting pitchers for Saturday’s scrimmage.
After tours of the baseball facilities, the baseball alums will join the pregame activities in The Junction and the sellout crowd at Davis Wade Stadium for the nationally-televised (ESPNU) 8 p.m. matchup between the unbeaten and 18th-ranked Bulldogs and SEC eastern Division foe Tennessee.
The 2013 Diamond Dogs will wrap up the weekend Sunday at Dudy Noble Field with a 12 p.m. scrimmage, also open to the public.
