Schools of Interest: Committed to Mississippi State. He also considered Ole Miss, Samford, Tennessee and Kentucky
Irby recently committed to Mississippi State. He talked about why he chose State.
"I really like how much the coaches want to win," he said. "And I love all the guys who play there. I really think we are going to have a shot at winning it all in Omaha. I just love Mississippi State. I've been a fan for a long time growing up."
Irby also considered several other SEC schools and one non-SEC school.
"I was also considering Ole Miss," he said. "I thought about making my visit to Ole Miss. I was also talking to Tennessee and Kentucky. And Samford had offered me."
Irby's recent official visit to Mississippi State sealed the deal for him.
"They had already offered me after the camp that I attended," said Irby. "The visit was mainly to make sure I was comfortable with everything there. It just made me want to come there more, so I committed soon after that."
He explained what the Bulldog coaching staff liked about his MSU camp performance.
"At the last camp they saw me, they pretty much offered me because they liked my arm strength, the deception that I have and my work ethic," said Irby. "They know that I am going to work as hard or harder than anybody on the team and do my best to get us to Omaha next year."
His arm strength was very impressive at the camp.
"At the camp I got up to 92 and I was sitting at 88 to 90," said Irby.
He gives credit to a couple of coaches for the improvement in his velocity.
"During the school year, I was around 86 to 88," said Irby. "Then, I had a horrible summer. I didn't know what happened. I started working on my mechanics to get back to what I knew what to do. Coach Lance Brewer, as well as (MSU pitching) Coach (Butch) Thompson, helped me with my mechanics. And everything just came together, Since then, I have been throwing harder than I ever have."
