Shelton State (AL) Community College small forward Travis Daniels talks about committing to Mississippi State.

  • Name: Travis Daniels
  • Classification: 2013
  • Junior College: Shelton State (AL) Community College
  • High School: Russellville (AL) High School
  • Position: Small Forward
  • HT-WT: 6-foot-8, 205 pounds
  • Colleges of Interest: Mississippi State, Murray State, Oklahoma, Southern Miss (offer), University of Central Florida, Western Kentucky (offer), Wichita State

  • "I just committed to Mississippi State," said Daniels, who came in for an unofficial visit to Mississippi State Tuesday.

Daniels chose Mississippi State over several other colleges, including Southern Miss, Western Kentucky, Oklahoma and others.

He explained why Mississippi State won out over all the other colleges.

"It is a very good situation for me to come in and play as a student/athlete," he said. "Coach (Rick Ray) wanted a player like me that can help him build the type program he is trying to build.

"I really felt comfortable there. And they were very high on academics. They really sold me on that. Academics and basketball. That's all you have to do.

"I liked all the coaches, Coach (Wes) Flanigan, Coach (George) Brooks. I also met the strength and conditioning coach.

I really liked everything about it."

The Mississippi State basketball facilities also impressed Daniels.

"The setup was nice," he said. "Everything is so close to each other. You don't have to go to a place and practice then come back to the Hump. It was all close together."

He also appreciated the loyalty that Mississippi State showed him.

"They stuck with me throughout the recruiting process," said the 6-foot-8, 205-pound small forward. "Mississippi State was there for me the entire time. Some coaches wanted to wait and see me play (in the upcoming jamboree in Dallas, TX). Mississippi State knew how I played and wanted me (now)."

Shelton State Community College head coach Barry Mohun, who has a similar philosophy to MSU head coach Rick Ray (put in the extra effort and work harder than others) talks about Daniels strengths on the court.

"I think his strengths are his versatility and his size," said Mohun. "He is 6-foot-8 and can handle it, pass it and shoot it. I think that is why Mississippi State liked him."

Mohun anticipates using Daniels' versatility even more this coming sesaon.

"I definitely think this is going to be his breakout year," said Mohun. "We will use him a little bit of everywhere, inside and outside. And we definitely will take advantage of his different skills, especially on the perimeter, probably let him bring the ball down more."

Offensively, Mohun likes what he sees from his talented sophomore.

"He can hit the mid-range jumper," said Mohun. "He has also been working very hard on his three-point game."

While there were several colleges already showing strong interest in Daniels, Mohun expects the interest to grow even more over the course of the next few weeks.

"A lot of schools were waiting to see him at the (junior college) jamborees that we are going to the next several weeks," said Mohun. "Early on, we had Oklahoma State and Tennessee talk to him. Also, Western Kentucky and Southern Miss have been by. I could go on and on about the schools.

The coach gives the Mississippi State coaching staff credit for their recruiting efforts with his talented small forward.

"I think Mississippi State was wise getting in there early and getting it done (because) I think his stock is really going to grow a lot this year," he said.

Daniels is the second MSU commitment in the 2013 class. He joins I.J. Ready, a point guard from Parkview Magnet High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
