A pair of doubleheaders, one turned out really well and the other didn’t. In San Antonio Cody Decker and Nate Freiman are now the league leaders in home runs for the Texas League. Although the Storm lost Corey Spangenberg, he is now hitting over .303 after starting off the month at .240. Matt Clark is really starting to heat up for the T-Padres after a rough April.

T-Padres 6 - New Orleans Zephyrs

Key Statistics: SS Cabrera 2-4, 2B, BB, RBI; 1B Clark 1-4, 2B, 4 RBIs; C Grandal 1-2, 2 BBs, RBI; RHP Palmer (W) 6.0 IP 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 Ks.

New Orleans, LA: The Tucson Padres scored four times with two outs in the the seventh inning Friday and beat the New Orleans Zephyrs, 6-4. The inning culminated with a chaotic play when Matt Clark hit a three-run double and tried to round the bases after an errant throw. Clark advanced to third on a throw home from right field and tried to score when catcher Luke Montz' attempted throw to third went into left field. Left fielder Bryan Petersen threw out Clark at home to end the inning. Despite the play at the plate going in favor of New Orleans, Montz was ejected for arguing the pitch before Clark's double should have been called an inning-ending third strike.

Tucson starter Matt Palmer pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits. The Padres bullpen continues to be a strength, as both Jason Ray and Erik Hamren pitched innings without allowing a baserunner after the Padres comeback. Alexi Amarista went 0-for-4 with a walk, ending his 18 game hitting streak. Everth Cabrera was 2-for-4 with a game-tying RBI double in the seventh for the T-Pads.

The win gave the Padres a split for the second straight series. Tucson has now split three series this season and has yet to win one.

SAN ANTONIO, TX: The San Antonio Missions defeated the Midland RockHounds 3-2 in the opening game of a double-header Friday Night at Wolff Stadium.

Midland struck first with a pair of runs in the third off San Antonio starter Hayden Beard. RockHounds third baseman Josh Horton grounded into a double play but left fielder Conner Crumbliss scored in the process. Center fielder Michael Choice then followed with a solo home run to right.

The Missions tied it up in their half of the frame, courtesy of a home run from third baseman Edinson Rincon and an RBI single off the bat of Jaff Decker that scored Reymond Fuentes with the tying run.

Cody Decker’s 10th home run of the season in the fourth made it 3-2 San Antonio and proved to be the difference in the game. Beard earned his second win of the season and Jeremy McBryde notched his second save in as many chances.

It was the Missions fourth win in their last five games and their fifth win in their last seven games.

Nate Freiman’s two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh gave the Missions a 6-5 win and a sweep of a double-header of the Midland RockHounds Friday night at Wolff Stadium.

Midland scored three times in the top of the first and once more in the third in fourth to build a 5-0 lead.

Cody Decker continued his torrid hitting by launching two more home runs and accounting for all four San Antonio runs. After his fourth inning home run in the opener proved to be the game-winner, Decker launched a solo blast to center field again in the fourth to put the Missions on the board to make it 5-1. An inning later Decker’s 12th homer of the season, a three-run shot, brought San Antonio within a run at 5-4.

In the bottom of the seventh with two out and Jaff Decker on first, Freiman drilled the first pitch he saw from RockHounds closer Jonathan Ortiz over the wall in left center for the victory.

Decker and Freiman are now tied for the Double-A lead in home runs with 12.

In the second contest the Storm were down 5-0 and despite a run in the fifth and two in sixth the Storm went down in the nightcap. Lake Elsinore has now lost 10 of their past 13 games.

On the positive side second baseman Corey Spangenberg has been red-hot in May, hitting .420 as his overall batting average has rise to .303 after starting off the month at .240.

South Bend Silver Hawks 3 - TinCaps 2

Key Statistics: RF/CF Gaedele 2-3, 2 3B, RBI; RHP Wisler 5.0 IP 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 4 Ks;

FORT WAYNE, IN: The South Bend Silver Hawks used a two-run sixth inning on Friday night to jump to a lead and defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps by a final score of 3-2.  Ruben Mejia pitched one third of an inning to begin the sixth for Fort Wayne and surrendered two runs, taking the loss in the series finale.

Matt Wisler pitched five innings for Fort Wayne (15-20), allowing one run on three hits and walking one. The 19-year-old from Bryan, Ohio struck out four batters for the fifth time in his seven outings. The lone run surrendered by Wisler came in the fifth on a Chris Ellison RBI double, making it 1-0 Silver Hawks.

In the latter half of the inning, the TinCaps battled back with help from the bottom of the lineup. Kyle Gaedele legged out an RBI triple to tie the game, and Corey Adamson lofted a sacrifice fly to left to give Fort Wayne a 2-1 lead over South Bend (20-15) at the end of five innings.

Mejia (0-1) faced Gerson Montilla to begin the sixth, and the Silver Hawks second baseman homered to deep left field, tying the game at two. Mejia got Matt Helm to ground out, but back-to-back doubles by Marc Bourgeois and Fidel Pena gave South Bend a 3-2 advantage which would stand for the remainder of the game.

The TinCaps challenged in the ninth, getting runners to first and third with nobody out, but a fielder’s choice at the plate and double play thwarted the rally and ended the ballgame. South Bend starter Jesse Darrah (3-1) earned the win throwing six innings, allowing two runs, striking out six and walking none.
