The Mississippi State volleyball team is picking up some talented athletes from around the country…
Roxanne McVey Commits to MSU
McVey, a 5'9" back row defender and excellent all-around athlete, is seeing some of her childhood dreams come true thanks to her commitment to Mississippi State. "I played volleyball since I was 8 (years old), and since I was 11 (years old) the next step was club ball," she said. "It is year-round and I have never gotten tired of it. I still have all the passion I've always had for the game. I have been a part of a very intense club for a while now, and I have always been playing on a top team while trying to work for a scholarship. This is something I've wanted to do since I was young, and being able to go to such a big school is very exciting." Her passion for the game stands out when talking to her, and she is determined to continue to work hard to come in and contribute right away to the Bulldog program. "I play on a club team who went to the junior Olympics," she said of her summer. "Up to the time we've played, we were training in the gym for about four hours a day, five days a week. We have been doing other things as well like swimming. Once that was over I came home and relaxed some, and now we are into team camp for school ball." With several schools interested in her, why the decision to commit to Mississippi State? "I committed to Mississippi State because it's the SEC; who wouldn't want to play there," she said. "I visited the campus and absolutely loved it. It was my first school that I had gone to (that also had) a big college football game (being played) and the people were so friendly and I felt so at home. It reminded me of my hometown (Tomball, TX), because the people are very friendly and it is very laid back. The coaches are awesome. Every second I was there I felt right at home, and I felt like the players all wanted to compete as much as I did so that was a huge plus to me. "The coaches were very friendly and wanted to get the job done. And every time they talked to me they said they just want to win. Being around that atmosphere with those coaches made me feel comfortable and I feel they will help me during my four years in school." She joins another recent commitment from Texas, Sarah Nielsen from Cyress Woods High School, who also happens to be a club team teammate of Roxanne's. "Sarah (will be) there and she is a teammate of mine," she added. "That was great for me to know that someone (that I already know will be) there." McVey informed us about the skill set she will bring to Coach Jenny Hazlewood's program. "I play a libero which is like a back row person so I have to be very good at defense," she said. "I talk a lot and am really loud on the court. I like helping my players and getting them into position. I want to contribute to a win any way that I can. I have been working hard on my defense and improving there." McVey plans to graduate early to get into college and get started, but she is unsure of her major at this point.
